PPG Goes on a Roller Coaster Ride

Although PPG’s DELFLEET® range was specially developed for trucks, buses, etc, it’s also an ideal solution for a whole host of other roles, including painting roller coaster cars!

With cars that hurtle along 1,219 metres of track at over 120 km/h, the recently opened ‘Steel Curtain’ is Pennsylvania’s tallest ever roller coaster and the stunning appearance of the entire structure was brought to life using PPG products. Located in Pittsburgh, which is the home of PPG, the spectacular new ride also sets a North American record for most inversions (nine) and a world record for tallest inversion (60 meters). Using its global reach and a specialist internal team dedicated to amusement parks, PPG was able to meet the project’s particular challenges. This included supplying a variety of coatings technologies in identical colours to five different manufacturing sites around the world. While the track and structures are finished in PPG Protective & Marine Coatings products, the cars themselves received a hard wearing, high quality automotive finish thanks to PPG’s Delfleet range. PPG proved to be the perfect partners for the project, says Shilpa Hareesh, PPG Corporate Accounts Manager, Amusement Parks and Entertainment Groups.

“This project required a global supplier that could match colours exactly for multiple structural components finished with multiple coatings products across the globe. Despite the inherent challenges that come with fabricating a large structure like this with several overseas vendors, tremendous cooperation among all the parties made everything work.”
